Start/Finish sign for Bay Cycle Way ncn700
Designed and crafted by local sculptural metalwork artist Chris Brammall of Ulverston for Morecambe Bay Partnership. Another can be found on the green adjacent the swing bridge at Glasson Dock south of Lancaster at the other end of this wonderful 132km ride.

Askam in Furness Cumbria . Ahhhhhhh a signed route Askam to Dalton #152330 . It starts off so promising heading towards Dalton. A nice path designated a shared use path and then this 1 METRE CYCLE LANE ON A 60 MPH ROAD . THERE'S ONE ON THE OTHER SIDE AS WELL YOU CAN HARDLY SEE IT. It would actually be safer and better without the cycle lane . I challenge any from @HighwaysEngland to cycle this and claim it's not terrifying. There's a far safer quieter and comfortable route by crossing the road a little further back toward Askam and joining the route past the Furness brick works and Chapel Hill Woods. See www.cyclestreets.net/journey/71774715/. Can @HighwaysEngland consider investing in improving this alternative route - signs, lighting, a better surface and negotiating with community to promote this alternative route rather than the death ride on the A595 twitter.com/Cyclinstructor/status/1311338824262451203

Askam in Furness Cumbria Local community made sign to warn of trip hazard when riding. It's needed here as the rider is going down hill .

General sign/notice:
Good practice

There is no cycle lane southbound. The northbound cycle way has obstacles built in making it far safer not to use them and cycle past these obstacles on the main carriageway. The obstacles need removing to allow a straight, continuous cycleway from the Ainslie Street round-a-bout to Park Road

Cycleway:
Problem
126791

The current cycle lane here (southbound) is not fit for purpose. It is safer to cycle on the road to the annoyance of motorised transport. The junctions where the cycle lane crosses (ASDA, Argos, Farmfoods) are dangerous for cyclists to use due to the high volume of traffic using these junctions. The solution is to give priority to the cycling lane over the junctions (just as the main road has).

Cycle lane needed from end of existing cycle lane at junction of Jute Road, along Ironworks Road, along Phoenix Road to join the A590 at the Fire Station. This will help BAE workers to commute from a large section of the town.

Cycleway:
Problem
126782

This is a new road layout which has made it more difficult and dangerous for cyclists. Cycling infrastructure needs adding to make it safe for cyclists to navigate this junction.

Cycleway:
Problem
126780

The cycle lane stops abruptly here. Cycling workers travelling to/from BAE need good, safe access. The cycling lane needs to be extended from where it stops to Bridge Road.

Cycleway:
Problem
126779

A safe, separate cycling access to BAE is needed from Walney. This is a VERY busy road with no cycling provision. Safe cycling lanes are needed here to encourage BAE workers to cycle to work.

Cycleway:
Problem
126774

A cycle lane is needed in both directions to give BAE workers safe access to/from the town centre to/from BAE.

Cycleway:
Problem
126770

On Abbey Road, SW bound, the cycle lane finishes at Park Drive. A safe, separate cycle lane is needed between Park Drive and Ramsden Square to allow cyclists to access the town centre.

Cycleway:
Problem
126760

Travelling from Barrow to Ulverston by bike can be achieved using fairly good and flattish lanes, avoiding the A590 BUT there is a section from London Road to Pennington Lane which requires cycling along the A590 in Lindal. The road is narrow and heavy goods vehicles are passing cyclists at 40mph and because of the narrowness of the road, FAR too close. A cycle lane/safe lane is needed to connect the cycle crossing at London Road (excellent) to Pennington Lane in both directions.

Cycleway:
Problem
126741

1. Highway code Rule 140 is NOT being enforced. Enforce it!
2. The trees too often close the cycle lanes with overhanging brances. The Council should keep the lanes clear of both branches and debris/slippery mud.

Rating Lane serves 3 large education facilities and also has Barrow's largest primary school at the bottom of the road. The current cycle paths are on both sides of the road and during school drop off/pick up times are inaccessible due to parked cars.

I propose building a two lane cycle way on one side of the road only. This could then allow cycles to go both ways or for people to cycle two abreast. It could be protected from the road by a raised kerb and would be wide enough to get a street cleaner along. This would massively improve the cycle to school journey and encourage cycling for young people.

Extend cycle lane all the way down Abbey Rd and add barriers to protect from traffic. Will help hospital staff in cycling to work safely.
